My daughter has just started half-day pre-school, so I don't have direct experience on her eating at school yet. So far I've been very fortunate though - she loves fruit and veggies. At McDonald's, she chooses the apple dippers over the fries! Wow, I can't take credit for it, but I'm thankful. At Applebee's she chooses the broccoli as her side dish on the kids menu. I love fruits and veggies myself, so I am a good example, but more than that, I think I'm just lucky.

When she goes to school, I hope she'll continue to make healthy choices. Setting a good example and constantly reinforcing the benefits of healthy eating is the best thing I can think of to have her choose well.

This is such a great thing, tori. I think having healthy snacks around the house is the key--there are so many things we as mom's can make/bake that can be healthy.

I think it's great that you can buy lunches on line and monitor what they purchase--however, remember they may purchase and not always EAT.

Sassy is pretty conscious of healthy eating. Tree Monkey just loves junk. I usually send the snacks with them or have them for when they get home. I do have a bag of snacks for L'il Red and have told the teachers NO sugar. He goes wild on it. It's pretty weird to watch.

I keep my words focused on health (sugar lowers your immune system, refined sugar turns to fat faster than fatty foods, refined sugar speeds up tooth decay) - I don't know if they are all true, but I was told to eat carrots for good eye sight and that was a lie. I'd be orange from all the keratin before my eye sight would improve. I always keep carrots on hand. Why? Because they are healthy snacks and they taste good with peanut butter.

I do not send my kids to school with money either. I ate too many candy bars and drank too much soda in high school, so my kids don't get the choice- unless it's their own money. :)

My son likes applesauce and granola bars. He likes bananas but that is pretty much the only fruit he likes.

I'm a horrible eater so I am a bad example. I like a lot of fruits but hate almost all veggies. I like my junk food.

Since I only have 2 in school and they are in elementary, I think it is easier to make sure they eat a healthy lunch because I am usually the one packing it. They do buy school lunch once or twice a week, but our school has unlimited veggie/fruit bar with each lunch and I know they take advantage of it. When I pack their lunches I always use whole wheat bread for sandwiches, always include a fruit or carrot sticks or something like that, and limit any pre-packaged foods. If they get a treat like a cookie or something in it, it is just that - an occasional treat.

I don't think you are a mean mom for not sending money with them. How are you to know they would use that money and make the right choices. I know back in school I would have bought cokes for lunch and that would have been it.
