I need y’alls input
Carpet is so pointless to have if you have children. Seriously. We didn’t pick our carpet color when we moved into our house. The house was brand new but everything had been picked by other people. So, our carpet is a lot lighter in color than if I was picking it. And y’all- our carpet is whacked now. We’ve rented a steam cleaner 3 times and it helps some, but it doesn’t take the stains out. We have red koolaid stains all over the place from when Livie went thru her spitting stage… Ugh.
So, here’s the deal: Sei and I wanna pull up the ick in our downstairs living room and replace it with either pergo/wood flooring or ceramic tile.
My question for y’all is: Which would you choose? Why? Would you choose something different than either of those?

This is where you need someone with style–not an old lady like me. I have hardwood floors in my kitchen, entry, and family room. I LOVE THEM. I think ceramic tile is lovely, but when you have kids, anything they drop BREAKS. I don’t know about Pergo–sorry.
Wish I could be more help.

we have both wood and tile floors and like the previous commenter stated, one of our tiles is cracked. So, if it is going to take a lot of traffic, I’d go for the pergo.

True true… Livie cracked my parent’s tile by knocking over a stool… not to mention thrown dishes!
We have tile downstairs(previous owners choice) and I hate it!!! Hate it! I am so scared of my kids falling and hitting there heads(which they have done), thinks breaking, and I can never ever seem to get them clean! UGH! Right now my baby is crawling around and by the end of the day, his onsie is all yucky!
We had carpet upstairs, but DS1 has allergies so it had to go first. And we picked a dark wood laminate. Love love love it!!! It added value to the home, easy to clean, and most of all gorgeous!!!

We had laminate in our house in Utah so yes- that’s a definite idea. Thanks!!
We put a laminate (cheaper than pergo brand) in our home in the 5th ward. LOVED it. When we finish the basement we are putting another laminate floor down. They are durable and even our dogs claws didn’t scratch it. After the basement is finished I want Hubs to take out the carpet and put real hard wood in. I like the tile in the bathroom and kitchen because of the water, but I’m all about the hard wood or laminate in other areas. Carpet is for bedrooms- is my motto.

I’m thinking laminate sounds better than tile. I was worried about tile being cold also…
Maybe you should look into bamboo or pvc that looks like wood. Sounds like most people seem to like the laminate idea. I like the look of laminate but, I don’t like how it sounds when you walk on it. It sounds to me like you are walking on plastic floors. Nathan and I are having this same discussion because we have dogs that have muddy paws and get our carpet orange from the lovely dirt that we have in the ‘hood. I like the bamboo idea b/c it looks like wood, doesn’t sound like plastic when you walk on it, it is a sustainable material and fairly inexpensive. I have only heard of the pvc that looks like wood, I haven’t actually seen it. I have seen the bamboo at Sam’s Club, CostCo and Ikea.
Good luck,
Nancy
I have never heard of the pvc/bamboo flooring. I will definitely have to look into it!! I’m all for sustainable and fairly inexpensive!! Thanks!
(I didn’t know you read my blog. lol)
pergo/laminate for sure

I have to agree with Klin on every point, I love the Italian marble tile in our kitchen, but I’m scared to death when the baby goes in there because it’s HARD, and I don’t want him to crack his head!! Also, like Nancy said, the Pergo will sound hollow if you use the thin underfoam. In my old house I opted for the cheaper foam in my kitchen, and every time I walked across it in heels it sounded hollow. In our new house, we opted for the thickest foam underlay we could get, and we don’t have that hollow sound. It’s perfect. We love it, and it’s super easy to care for, even during the cold, winter months when ick gets inevitably tracked across it.
Good luck on your new flooring; I hope you love it for a long time to come.
Sister – the laminate is what we have in our kitchen with the thickest foam underneath like Rosey suggested. It doesn’t sound hollow or plasticky.

When we built our first home 12 years ago, we didn’t have all the money in the world so we got the best Pergo we could buy. It looked nice… it wasn’t awesome. I can spot fake (pergo, laminate, etc) from a mile away – it does appear plastic-y and I’m not talking about just walking on it. I am not a fan of it… yes, it was durable and never looked worn, but it reminds me of cheap. If you can’t get real wood, I’d go with a nice tile. Tile is extremely durable – there are kinds that will break, but most actually do not. Our last two houses (and the one now) are full of tile and I LOVE it. Drop anything, spill anything, etc and it is as good as new. Lots of things actually stain and ruin Pergo…. You can get the nice 18×18 tile and it has a better effect than the 12×12.
I guess you can say I’m a tile/travertine fan!
If you want to go for the easiest clean up? Poured sealed cement. Now for something a little more realistic? I’d say wood, because I think it looks better and hurts bare feet less than tile. Tile is ouchie after running around, although the drawback of wood is staining and ruined finishes. Okay I lied go with the cement floor all you have to do is hose it off
