My 8 year old, Taj, is ALL about dogs. So he was thrilled when I told him I had the opportunity to review the DVD The Dog Who Saved Halloween. He couldn’t wait for the weekend so we could pop some popcorn and settle on the  couch for movie night!

The verdict: Taj LOVED it!!! It was a cute movie and just perfect to start the Fall season off right. It was a great family movie. Being the nerd I am I was excited to have Joey Lawrence and Mayim Bialik work together again. Remember- they were on “Blossom” together!?!? I am not a big reader, so this is my 1st book review to do on my blog! I was a little nervous when I accepted the “challenge.” I was worried I wouldn’t ever finish the book. BUT- I did and it was worth it!

The book was A Critical Loss of Balance by Mark E. Shaver.

“How far would you go to restore the balance in your life that a tragedy had stolen from you?
Cliff Elliott thought he had endured the worst thing a parent could endure when his nine year old daughter was kidnapped, but he was wrong. The circumstances that led to her return were far worse than anything he could have imagined. Now Cliff, a man who rarely uttered a cross word, a man whose temperament and nature were as gentle as any man’s could be, had his life thrown irreparably out of balance.
Left with no other choice, Cliff set out not for revenge, but for justice; a justice that he hoped would restore the balance that was now absent from his life. The price to be paid to regain that balance though was much higher than he ever imagined it would be. In fact, Cliff almost paid the ultimate price almost. So take a walk in another man’s shoes and try to imagine what you would do if you were faced with, ‘A Critical Loss of Balance‘.”

The subject of this book was right up my alley, so to speak. Being married to a police officer, I hear and read about crime all the time. I am in school now hoping to become a victim’s advocate as well. So this book sounded great. It started off strong, meaning it didn’t take me 50 pages to get into it. Right from the beginning I was interested in what would happen next. I read the book in 2 1/2 days flat. I needed to know how it would end and I am impatient, so I just didn’t put it down and my family and home were neglected. haha  I felt the pain of the parents and felt the adrenaline rush as the cops and Cliff moved closer to justice.

Mark Shaver did a great job writing this. I envy his creativity and the gift to express his stories. As a writer (kinda) I would love if my work was worth publishing. Mark definitely has a true gift of storytelling and the fact that he publishes his own books is inspiring.
